I think the concept of the reacher and settler is a somewhat offensive one. To suggest that half of all married people think they could have done better, seems to me rather depressing, and very insulting to the half of marriage partners who have been 'settled' for.

I do think there is sometimes an inbalance in which partner is more concerned to please the other one. In our case I would say that my husband used to try harder to please me than I did to please him. this was not because I thought I could have done better than him, it was more my natural bone idleness. DD has helped to redress the inbalance.
