What punishments have worked for you? Which made you (or your partner) feel frustrated or resentful?

This is the meta forum, focused more on general talk.

A whole new way of feeling punished....

Postby blackbird » Sun Jul 29, 2012 6:10 pm

... have just watched an hour's documentary on the BBC about Fifty Shades of Grey. Oh God..... I want to throw up.

Thousands of women buying whips and jingle balls (?) from Ann Summers.... :sigh:

Suddenly, a rare and beautiful thing I care deeply about has become titillating trash. It even came up as an option on my supermarket "did you forget to buy this?" list this week. NO, I FUCKING DIDN'T FORGET TO BUY IT!!!!

Oh, take me back to "the spanking that dare not speak its name" ....... :banghead: ;)

How did you find the board?: I was looking for a domestic discipline forum that catered to all sexual identities and all partnerships. This was the most inviting one I found.

I disagree. Thousands of women are reading these books. Some percentage of them are going to stretch out and try a few new things, which might include discipline. Some will find it emboldens them to do some things they already thought about. Others may be surprised to find aspects of the books resonating with them.

So many people come to dd through trying out spanking as foreplay or role play, and find that it speaks to them and meets their needs. These books will have thousands of women trying this out. It is all to the good, IMO.

You are right really, artlover. Sorry, it was a bit of an explosion because of the crassness of much of the programme I watched. I, too, hope it will help people to open up to their desires - and it is an interesting phenomenon, that quite so many millions of copies have flown out of the bookshops.

My local Waterstone's (bookshop chain, for the Americans) has one window with 32 copies of Fifty shades of grey! The other window? 30 or so different books. And one Fifty shades of grey

I still haven't read it though.

I read the first book but I thought it was lame. The hero and heroine are both very dull people, and I didn't really care what happened to them. Also I don't care for the idda that Christian is somehow damaged because of his desire to dominate, as if male dominance was some kind of disease that men need to be cured of.

Ah I came across why this is flicking through the second book! He's not a dom, he's actually a sadist, except the heroine somehow CURES him of that desire to hurt - how convenient! That was when I decided it was just too Twilighty to keep reading!

ETA: Oops, that spoiler is still quite a bit too legible! Maybe this will work.

You're both right. I say the more spanking goes mainstream the better, regardless of its form. Okay, I find the writing style a little immature. Lots won't, or won't care - while I'd love for some really high-quality spanking literature to get out there, I don't think it hurts the 'spanko cause' that the most famous example of the moment isn't exactly Jane Austen.

HEY. Someone should totally write new Jane Austen books, in the vein of 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies', 'Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters' etc, but with spanking.

Anyway. I'm delighted for all the people who are reading it and it's broadening their horizons. What's irritating is the people who keep referring to it in a 'ooh, isn't this naughty' kind of way, who have no intention of reading it and learning something new, but are laughing at all the freak show 'kinky people' who do these things. There's a well-known radio talk show presenter in Ireland who will *not* let it go. And he really needs to stop talking about it in the morning when kids are on summer holidays. When we have to tolerate holier-than-thou voyeur types giggling at the fact that people like being spanked, sometimes I do wish the books would just go away. So if blackbird has experienced the same reaction to it that I have, I sympathise!

... so. until i logged in today and stalked my Top's posts, i was completely unaware of what this fifty shades of grey nonsense was.

just want to say that i'm disgusted and angry. ugh.

*anastasia steele is perhaps one of the dumbest fiction names i've ever heard of.
*'The Fifty Shades trilogy was developed from a Twilight fan fiction originally titled Master of the Universe and published episodically on fan-fiction websites under the pen name "Snowqueen's Icedragon". The piece featured characters named after Stephenie Meyer's characters in Twilight, Edward Cullen and Bella Swan.' <--- :banghead:
*the bdsm lifestyle isn't something that needs to be exploited in, yet again, such a terrible way.
*'Her roommate, the editor of the college newspaper, inexplicably asks Anastasia rather than another reporter to fill in for her at an interview with an elusive industrialist who is a major university benefactor. The interview is outwardly a disaster: Anastasia falls down, gets flustered, asks Christian Grey if he’s gay. But as in Twilight, her incompetence ignites a possessive urge and an erotic obsession in Grey.' <--- couldn't have summed it up better myself, thinkprogress.org
*' He also mentions other paperwork, but first takes her to a room full of BDSM toys and gear. There Grey informs her that the second contract will be one of dominance and submission and that there will be no romantic relationship, only a sexual one. The contract even forbids Ana from touching Grey or making eye contact with him. It is as this point that Grey realizes that Ana is a virgin and agrees to take her virginity without making her sign the contract. The two then have sex.' <-- this summary-excerpt proves that the author has either no clue whatsoever when it comes to the bdsm lifestyle or gained her opinions from terribly written porn by a desperate person or somebody who was craving a power trip. plus, a virgin would completely give themselves away after signing a contract that states they are to have no romantic relationship with the person who just gave their virginity away to. oh, and that basically they'll be a sex slave to this person.
*dominant/submissive relationships can take a number of months if not a number of years to truly develop.
*it's bizarre that he wanted her to only eat specific foods. i'm sure that the middle aged mothers reading this believe that doms are all like this and want to control every single part of their lover's/slave's lives.
*while the book's protagonist was american, the author scattered british idioms throughout her story. :hmmmmm:
*an interest in dominance/sumbission does not come from abuse. ask R.

... i would rather have no books written about bdsm/with bdsm themes than have one extremely popular one which exploits and damages the idea of the lifestyle. basically, you just get a large number of people thinking that all of this crap about bdsm is true when it isn't. it's sort of like how people think submissives were abused as children or have no self worth. whatever. this is so ridiculous. /growls

UGH. now my brain is fried!
